Do you ever see those people leaving the gym that look like they just took some sort of uppers? And of course this all happens when you are just arriving yourself at what feels like the crack of dawn (which would have made their crack of dawn even earlier than yours) and you are just barely making it there on time. You are wearing mismatched gym wear and haven’t had your morning coffee yet? What are they doing that you’re not doing and why do they look like that when they’re done and you don’t? Are they just freaky gym rat exercise lovers, high on life?
Well, turns out that the researchers who publish a well known exercise journal have know discovered that working out can deplete the body of very key minerals that are required for your body to run properly (and have the energy it need to carry you around all day long). Makes sense, but many of us have never given it much thought since we think of our exercise time as something that is purely good for our bodies and not something that has a slightly bad side effect (yes, besides the soreness the next day and discomfort).
So all you have to make sure of is that you “restock the fridge” as one would say and put those minerals back where they came from and then things will be as good as new (well maybe not exactly as exercise is supposed to make you at least a little tired later when you are meant to be sleeping-not right after!). Consider adding these main minerals to your diet.
Zinc – Nope, it’s not just the thing that your mom put on your nose at the beach that made you look stupid, it actually helps the body build muscle fibers and Burn Fat (yes!). So eat some nuts that are high on zinc on workout days like walnuts and do what Popeye told you and eat loads of spinach. Of course if neither of those interests you, there are always boring supplements or even those new lozenges that are the rage that you suck on when you feel you might be getting a cold.
Calcium – How many times do you have to see a milk commercial before it sinks in that “milk does a body good”? This one helps muscles contract properly so we don’t want to mess around there, who knows what that would look like if they didn’t contract properly. So hit the low fat milk product option -no not ice cream (although that does have calcium)-more like yogurt, especially the kind with the extra bacteria, delicious cottage cheese and maybe a small bit of hard cheese.
Magnesium – My personal favorite…This helps the muscles turn bad stuff (like carbs and sugar) into good stuff like energy for your body to use. Not only that but it actually improves mood in certain doses by giving you an overall sense of calm, aids in sleep and can help move it on through in the bowel area as well. Almonds and cashews are good bets but I am a huge fan of the powdered supplement Natural Calm.
